One of the species of
whales found in the Sea of Cortez is the Fin whale. They are smaller than
the Blue whale but can still reach a length of 25 m. They can live for 90
years and weigh around 80 ton. The Fin whale can dive for 20 minutes and
can reach a dept of 350 m. At birth, the baby is 6 m long and weighs 2000
kg.
The larger fin on the
back is an easy way to distinguish the Fin whale from the Blue whale. We
noticed the fact that the snout of the Fin whale comes further on the
surface and we haven't seen a single Fin whale rise his tail out of the
water while diving, which we saw frequently with Blue whales.
The Fin whale has a
darker skin than the Blue whale. Their spout is not as spectacular as a
Blue whale's spout and they are - because they move faster - not as easy
to follow as a Blue whale.
