Every year in the month
of January the islands of Loreto National Marine Park become home for 9
different species of Whales; Blue, Finback, Sei, Sperm, Minke, Pilot,
Orcas, Humpback and a few California Gray Whales. These giant Mammals can
reach over 100 feet in length, and weigh over 150 tons, and we often get
to see these whales from touching distance.
Due to the fact that
the Blue and the Finback Whales remain on the surface of the water an
average of 2 to 6 minutes prior a dive, and travels at a constant speed of
around 10 miles per hour, it is crucial to understand many variables,
which will determine the length of the dive which can be as much as 22
minutes, and the place where the whale will surface. We are continuously
moving our boats to a strategic position ready to encounter these giants.
